A Washington woman is accused of throwing her 1-year-old down a 50-foot embankment on Saturday, but says that it wasn’t her fault–the devil made her do it. Police say that 25-year-old Destiny Ahenakew tossed her child into the air, over a fence, and down an embankment in Northwest Spokane.
KREM reported that a man working on a home in the area met the mother when she asked for water for her and her child. He obliged before calling the police, concerned that the mother and son had nowhere to go–then he saw Ahenakew throw the child over the fence. The 1-year-old fell fifty feet and hit a tree.
Before throwing her baby, witnesses say that Ahenakew took out a Bible and prayed. She later claimed, “The devil made me do it.”
The child was rescued by a man on the scene who brought the child up the embankment to safety, and the baby was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Bail has been set at $50,000. Prosecutors have requested that, if the mother posts bail, it be required that she not use methamphetamines.
