You might think that the title of Walmart Employee of the Month would be a meaningless honor, even a little shameful — a bit like being given a gold star by the Nazi Party. But, judging by events in Florida, you’d be wrong.
Some wacko in Florida named Willie Mitchell has had his own personal Falling Down moment and shot at a colleague’s SUV because she was named Employee of the Month, not him. Apparently he shouted “I’ll show you” before opening fire, and he sure did.
“She was announced as the employee of the month which you would think that would be something good, people would be happy for her,” a spokesman from the Broward Sheriff’s Office said. “But there was one employee who wasn’t happy.”
Thankfully the girl was unharmed and the shooter was caught on CCTV. He was subsequently arrested, charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and fired by Walmart — although, given the combination of mindless aggression and fanatical devotion to the company he displayed, it’s surprising they didn’t give him a promotion.
“Clearly these actions that we saw, I think we see why he wasn’t chosen as employee of the month,” Veda Coleman Wright of the Broward Sheriff’s Office said. Seems something of an under-statement if you ask us.
A Walmart representative told CBS 4 News that Willie Mitchell has been terminated as an employee. The spokesperson also said that the employee of the month does not receive any money or gifts. She said it is strictly a recognition from the store.
