Most of us, when we make a mistake that hurts others, will go out of our way to try and make it better.
Karl Rove, however, is not like most of us. When confronted by a student claiming to be an Iraq War vet while attending an event at the University of Connecticut on Tuesday, Rove remained unrepentant, and refused to apologize for the Iraq War.
The Hartford Courant reports that, while attending the event, Rove was approached by Ryan Henowitz, who introduced himself as an Iraq War veteran. He told Rove that he was just 20 years old when he saw his friends “torn apart and Iraqi children screaming for their parents as indiscriminate shrapnel scarred them and us in ways that we will never know.”
He then demanded an apology from Rove, asking, “Can you take responsibility and apologize for your decision in sending a generation to lose their humanity and deal with the horrors of war which you have never had the courage to face?”
It should surprise nobody that Rove refused. Rove, after all, is still championing Bush’s misadventure in Iraq, which will likely be reflected in history as the death knell of the United States as a hyperpower in world politics. Someone like that doesn’t care how many children get scarred by shrapnel, or how many soldiers get ripped to pieces.
Rove told Henowitz, “I appreciate your service, but I’m not going to apologize for our government doing the right thing in removing Saddam Hussein from power.” He continued:
“It was right to remove Saddam Hussein from power. … We should be proud of what we were able to do in Iraq and we should be sorry that we left them alone, because when we left them, things deteriorated,”
Earlier in the speech, Rove took the opportunity to hope that Elizabeth Warren, who he dismissed as “Pocahontas,” would run for the Democrats — despite Warren announcing what seems like every week she has no intention of doing so — because “We should be so lucky.” It’s an increasingly common conservative hope that Warren will run; Rove glibly told the audience, “I want you to do everything you possibly can to get Pocahontas in the race.”
They apparently are that terrified of Hillary Clinton.
