A family feud in Spokane, Washington has escalated with the inclusions of racial slurs.Jennifer Garrison, owner of the home and whose neighbor placed a racially charged sign on her window to attack the Garrison family, told the local media outlet KXLY that she felt like “a prisoner in my own home. I can’t enjoy my front yard, I can’t go into my backyard” because her neighbor typically places signs “based around hillbillies and has a picture of her hand flipping us off and it says ‘hillbillies’ underneath it.”
Garrison’s boyfriend approached the neighbor to inform them that “redneck” is the preferred terminology, not “hillbilly,” which prompted the woman to place a sign reading “NO UR [sic] N*GGERS.”
Garrison believes that the sign is a reference to her two children, who are half-Cambodian. She said “I don’t care if they’re blue or purple, they’re kids. Leave them alone, that’s all I want.”
The neighbor behind the signs, meanwhile, has said that the Garrison family is a public nuisance, and have been since they moved in a few months ago. Her complaints are that the Garrison family keeps a messy yard and regularly report her dog to the police. The police themselves won’t do anything, since the feud has yet to escalate into harassment and the First Amendment awards you the right to be a bigoted idiot. After speaking with the media, the neighbor removed the sign from her yard.
