Appearing recently on an episode of “Prophetic Perspective on Current Events,” Jerry Boykin, retired Lt. General, ordained minister and former United States Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence under President George W. Bush from 2002 to 2007, claimed that the Constitution was “inspired by God” and that there was no conflict in the fact that as an officer sworn to allegiance to the Constitution he asserted that his first duty was to God. The same, he said, does not apply to a Muslim whose first duty is to “Allah.”
Of course the statement is ludicrous on its face since Allah is merely the Arabic for God and both Muslims and Christians worship the God of Abraham meaning that both the Muslim who says that his first allegiance is to Allah and the Christian who says that his is to God are swearing allegiance to the very same deity.
Boykin broached the subject in speaking of Nidal Assan, the Army Lt. Col. who killed 13 soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009. Explaining why, in his view, Muslims should be precluded from service in the military he said that it should have, “raised a red flag” prior to his acceptance by the military that he, as a Muslim had already sworn his primary allegiance to Allah.
His explanation as to why this was not a concern for a Christian was that there was no problem there since the, “Constitution was inspired by God.” He barely stops short of declaring the U.S. a Christian nation. He also ignores the fact that the Constitution clearly states that there shall never be a religious test for any public office. One might be justified in wondering why, if there is no religious test for office, there should be one for service in the armed forces.
He laments that rather than focusing on the “true” threats to our democracy and way of life, our government has targeted the Christian right as being a “terrorist” threat. He “knows” and has “seen” their “plan,” it is out there, he says for anyone to see if only they will ‘do the research’ he says it is plain that they have slowly been bringing their Sharia Law into our legal system.
Will the delusions of persecution on the radical religious right never die?
