Kermit Gosnell is a name that disgusts universally. Unfortunately, the right-wing anti-choice crowd have made him their poster boy to “prove” the evils of abortion, portraying him as typical of abortion providers. Those who are pro-choice wish that he himself had been aborted, preventing him from having a chance to commit the atrocities he has been convicted of. He is, of course in no way typical, he is a monster and every day that he serves in prison is well deserved.
His clinic in Philadelphia was by all accounts a real life “Little Shop of Horrors” where he performed abortions with no regard for sanitation and in complete disregard of the law. This is not surprising since he began his career as an abortionist pre-Roe v. Wade and apparently continued to run his practice the same way he did as a back alley abortionist.
One might expect that after his conviction on three murder charges, 21 felony counts of illegal late-term abortions and 211 counts of violating the 24-hour informed consent law, he would by now be showing some sign of remorse for the heinous goings on in his clinic. Far from it, as he remains adamant that he has done no wrong, saying that no one was interested in taking into account the population that he worked with given the location of his clinic.
He not only performed sloppy abortions in unsanitary conditions he was widely known to play fast and loose with the prescription pad, writing Oxycontin prescriptions repeatedly for people who he admitted were probably addicts. He used an outdated and unreliable method to determine gestational age and when he did use ultra sound, a more reliable method, he would tilt the transducer in order to obtain misleading results. All of that was a complete waste of time though since in his arrogance he actually recorded the true gestational age and, even though the law in Pennsylvania forbids abortions after 24 weeks, performed them anyway.
From prison, he is still trying to claim that he was an “angel of mercy” saving these women from themselves and their fetuses from lives of abject poverty and drug addiction. As if that is not enough he has now written a poem from his prison cell attempting to portray himself as a great humanitarian.
Are Labeled Killers!
Horrendous, Exploitive [sic]
Not Physicians, Oathed To Heal
Lest We Forget,
What Chance Have Those?
Those Without The Support
Of Their Parents
Their Societies …
Without Sufficient Support
Stumble Into Drugs
Into Mental Illness
Into Institutions … And …
Languish in Jails …
Perhaps he will see the light one day, since he has plenty of time to contemplate his actions as he serves a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
But given his arrogance, that seems highly doubtful. He seems to be so convinced that he can do no wrong and has done no wrong. He certainly has done the argument for the pro-choice side no good, and the anti-choice crowd must not be allowed to hold him up as an example of all abortion providers. He is far from it.
