“Gun control laws infringe on the rights of responsible gun owners!” Scratch an NRA donor just enough, and they will defend irresponsible gun owners too. As long as gun owners aren’t felons, any suggestion of common sense gun regulations are taboo. In truth, you cannot legislate away stupidity, but it wouldn’t hurt for the NRA and its ranks to return to their long-abandoned emphasis on gun safety and responsibility. Evidence abounds these days that their safety agenda is needed more than ever, far more than their contemporary M.O. of buying off Congress members and enriching gun manufacturers.
These manufacturers are a major supplier to Walmart, which is America’s largest gun retailer. It is oddly fitting that the nation’s most recent outbreak of gun stupidity took place in one of Walmart’s very own parking lots — in none other than the chain’s home state of Arkansas. As reported by the Russellville Police Department, at approximately 11AM this past Saturday, a small child was trying to lift himself into the seat of his father’s pick-up truck. Grabbing the seat bottom as support, he unexpectedly took hold of Daddy’s unsecured shotgun, pulling the trigger and wounding his father in the back.
Fortunately, the child was not hurt, and his father is in stable condition, recovering from the wound in a local hospital. Whether this will teach him the life-saving importance of gun safety remains in question. The learning curve of a father who leaves an unsecured, loaded shotgun within easy reach of a young child needs to be very steep. It is a sad commentary that this kind of close call may be just the teacher he needs, in the absence of others.
