A new book by Professor Dick Swaab called “We Are Our Brains” attempts to make the case that the mother’s lifestyle determines her child’s sexuality.
Yes, indeed, Dick Swaab said it. Professor Swaab also said that bratty teenage behavior is evolution’s way of discouraging incest. As if the average teenager’s bathing habits were not enough of a deterrent.
While some might be a bit taken aback by the sheer stupidity of Swaab’s opinions, others welcome them. Gay rights activist Peter Tatchell said, “It is a slapdown for religious and political homophobes. If being gay is mostly or wholly determined by biological factors prior to birth, it is immoral to condemn or discriminate against lesbians and gay men.”
We find ourselves wondering exactly who this book was written for. Without any reliable sources for studies cited, Swaab’s suppositions seem to be only guesswork and personal prejudice. We would, however, like to ask the good professor what sort of mental trauma is a result of growing up wielding a name like “Dick Swaab.” Perhaps it means that you’ll grow up and waste a lot of time and money on a degree so that you can write small-minded things about human behavior.
