KSFY reported last week that a vender selling “Official RUNNIN N*GGER Targets” was booted from the Sioux Falls’ Collector’s Classic Gun Show over the weekend.
The gun show’s manager, Bob Campbell, told the KSFY he was “disgusted” by the flyers, which featured a caricatured profile of a black man and the words “Official RUNNIN N*GGER Target” across the top, sold for 10 cents a piece.
Campbell assured reporters that the flyers were snuck into the gun show.
During an interview, the vendor made his case, explaining why he decided to use those targets:
Why aren’t they there? You know, there are some black people, and then there are some Negroes.
Sounds like he might be trying to channel Chris Rock. Of course, Rock stopped doing that routine because “some people that were racist thought they had license to say n*gger.” As this flyer/target reveals, White people don’t need license or permission to say it.
In a truly depressing statistic, the vender went on to say that “I sold 500 of them this weekend so what difference does it make.”
He was reported later and banned from the gun show as a result.
It seems like there’s been a lot of incidents concerning racism over the last few weeks; this comes on the heels of the recent scandal at University of Oklahoma’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter. A video of the SAE brothers singing and chanting that “there will never been another n*gger at SAE” made headlines and, as a result, the university shut down the fraternity and expelled two students.
Some people look at these things and wonder where these racists are coming from. They see it as something that’s getting worse, not better, but I disagree. These racists were always with us; the only difference is that we notice them now. At what other point in history would something like this have ever made the headlines?
Perhaps I’m just an eternal optimist, but it seems to me that the first step to fighting a problem is acknowledging you have one. And stories like this appear to be moving White culture in the direction of “guys, we have a problem.”
