Prosecutors filed misdemeanor hate-crime charges Wednesday against three white college students at San Jose State who allegedly tormented their black roommate. Freshmen Colin Warren, Joseph Bomgardner, and Logan Beaschler reportedly hazed and ridiculed their roommate by placing a bike lock around his neck and “losing the key,” hanging Nazi symbols around their apartment, and writing the N-word on a dry-erase board. The students each face up to one year in county jail if convicted of the charges.
The three white roommates allegedly attacked their black roommate by calling him “three-fifths,” alluding to the long stretch of American history when blacks were considered three-fifths of a person for purposes of calculating electoral districts. Later, the students changed the name calling to “fraction” and hung a Confederate flag in the campus suite they shared.
The Black Students Union at San Jose State plan to rally Thursday on campus to demand answers.
