The U.S. was represented in Egypt this past week by three of the finest (note the sarcasm here) minds in Congress. When Michele “CO2 is good for you” Bachman, “Loopy” Louis Gohmert, who thinks that anencephalitic fetuses should be carried to term and given a chance because one of them may become the next Einstein or Salk, and Steve King who thinks that most of the undocumented immigrants from Mexico come here carrying a 75 pound bale of pot on their backs showed up and opened their mouths, it was truly facepalm worthy.
The three met with the new interim government and General El Sisi who engineered the coup that was not a coup and then later held a press conference. The press conference was opened by Bachman, who should have made us all proud of the picture of America her brilliant remarks must have inspired. She began by saying:
My name is Michele Bachman, I’m a member of the United States Congress of the United States of America.
What country does she think they would expect the United States Congress to be a part of? She later made another utterance which must have made even these Egyptians for who English is not a first language cringe saying that she would continue to push for:
…Military support…for…United States support financially.
One can easily envision a room full of reporters looking at one another in puzzlement and scratching their heads wondering what she just said.
At times, Bachmann seemed to be saying that the Muslim Brotherhood was behind the 9/11 attacks in this country saying:
We have seen the threat that the Muslim Brotherhood has posed here for the people in Egypt. We have seen the threat that the Muslim Brotherhood has posed around the world. We stand against this great evil. We are not for them. We remember who caused 9/11 in America. We remember who it was that killed 3,000 brave Americans. We have not forgotten.
Of course everyone except for bobble head Barbie and her friends knows that Al Qaeda was behind those attacks and that the Muslim Brotherhood in fact decried it as an evil act. Former President Morsi who was, at that time, a top leader of the Muslim Brotherhood said of the attacks that it was,
a wrong act which we denounce regardless of its doer.
However, Michele bachmann never has been one to allow silly things like facts get in the way of making her point no matter how silly it may be.
Then the diplomatic wonder, Steve King, stepped up to the microphone and proceeded to announce to a nation full of Muslims that we would always stand against the Muslim Brotherhood and all of the other terrorist organizations in the region. There may be nothing intrinsically wrong with saying that we will stand against terrorists, but to call a relatively moderate organization a terrorist group simply because they are a Muslim group is offensive not only to Muslims but to any rational and open minded human being.
“Loopy” Louis, not to be outdone when it was his turn, began by saying that it was great to be there in Cairo where most of the history of civilization had it’s foundations. Apparently he has never heard of Sumeria, which is some distance from Egypt and was a much earlier culture. He too refers to the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization repeatedly.
Bachman came back once more to tell those gathered that they need not worry because the three of them were “very strong voices” in Congress and that they would be working for continued support for Egypt in their fight against the “terrorists known as the Muslim Brotherhood.”
All in all, it was a very embarrassing episode for us as a nation to have three of the least intelligent and least articulate members of Congress representing us in a foreign country. One can only imagine the image it gave to those present at the time. Hopefully enough of them have actually visited here to know that we are not all a bunch of babbling idiots.
