The First Amendment grants you the right to an opinion that the government cannot infringe upon. It does not grant you the right to a platform to air your opinion. Furthermore, corporations are not the government, so the first two points are moot.
The Religious Right learned that when the hammer came down on Welfare Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson, who made homophobic remarks. Now, it’s looking like the same thing might happen to the Duggar family, and for the same reasons. And frankly, it’s about time.
Their show, 19 Kids and Counting, current airs on The “Learning” Channel, which brought us other quality programming like My Mommy’s a Conceited Witch Who Lives Through Me, also known as Toddlers and Tiaras (the only thing I learned watching the “Learning” Channel is that I never want to watch that intellect-insulting garbage ever again). The petition, circulating on Change.org, urges TLC to end the show; a letter posted on the petition page notes that “The Duggars have been using their fame to promote discrimination, hate, and fear-mongering against gays and transgendered people. You need to take a stand on the side of justice and cancel their show.”
Currently, the petition has over 12,500 signatures.
The Duggars haven’t exactly been secretive of their rather warped worldview. Last week, because Jim Bob and his wife Michelle weren’t getting enough attention, they posted a picture of themselves kissing on Facebook. That wouldn’t be bad, but they did it right after their daughter posted a picture of her and her new husband sharing their first kiss. They captioned their picture with “
Please pay attention to us!” “God designed marriage to be a loving, dynamic relationship between a husband and wife for a lifetime. God loves marriage and it is supposed to be full of love, joy, fun and romance,” and, “We challenge all married couples to take a happily married picture and post it here.”
That “all” is a misnomer. They didn’t want “all” happily married couples. John Becker, of “The Bilerico Project,” an LGBT blog, posted a photo of him kissing his husband. He says that the photo was taken down and he was banned, according to E! News.
The petition’s creator also noted reports that the family donated $10,000 to repeal equal housing rights for LGBTQ citizens, and that Josh Duggar is a member of the Family Research Council, a hate group. Which should surprise nobody, given the background he was indoctrinated in.
