Whomever said “picture is worth a thousand words” must have had the photo below in mind. New York Times Staff Photographer Doug Mills posted this gem from President Barack Obama and Texas Governor Rick Perry’s July 9th border crisis summit in Dallas. As JustJim35 at Daily Kos wryly noted:
“Something tells me Rick Perry’s Immigration meeting with President Obama didn’t go as planned.”
But even if this photo sheds light on the tone and outcome of the meeting and isn’t just some amusing random outtake, it still raises more questions than it answers. What actually transpired during that 15 minutes on Airforce One? What made everyone laugh, and why doesn’t Perry join in the fun? Was the joke at his expense, or was he the one who made the joke? Perhaps Perry suppressed his laughter to look all smart and serious, in keeping with his new, bespectacled smarty-pants image.
And who is that lovely mystery lady beaming brightly upon the Texas Governor’s scowling visage?
Despite the president’s viral quote, ““I’m not interested in photo-ops. I’m interested in solving the problem,” the New York Daily News reports much planning and staging went into this short meeting/photo-op. Obama also insists that he and Perry had a “constructive” meeting with no major disagreements, except for just that one little thing…
Perry laid out four major concerns he wants addressed by the feds, according to the New York Daily News:
The number of border patrol agents, their positioning, how laws treat refugees from different countries differently and the slow pace of the legal process for those who are detained.
The not-as-liberal-as-conservatives-think Obama has no “philosophical objections” to any of Perry’s requests. But his hands are tied because the GOP-led Congress has gone totally BANANAS (Bankroll Absolutely Nothing Anytime Nor Anywhere So-help-us-gawd) and won’t vote the necessary funds.
Sorry, Rick… since the Republicans see you as a leader and presidential contender, maybe you should address your complaints to your party’s leadership instead.
