Terry Bartley initiated the “Hot Car Challenge” to raise awareness regarding about parents leaving their kids in hot vehicles. In the video Bartley is shown profusely sweating, clearly in conditions not suitable for babies. Bartley says,
“I’m sitting in the car with the windows rolled up because I want to know how it feels to be left in the car and sitting in the back seat, strapped into the car seat”
He was inspired after the death of 22 month year old Cooper Harris days earlier. Cooper’s father has been charged with felony murder and cruelty to a child in the second degree. Cooper’s father claims he left the baby in the car accidently and pleaded not guilty to the crime.
According to the website, kidsandcars.org, 17 children have suffered from fatal heat strokes this year in vehicles. The video has prompted many other “Hot Car Challenges” including young children and animals.
