Patriotism, according to Samuel Johnson, is the last refuge of the scoundrel. Ambrose Bierce begs to differ, and claims it’s the first. Last word, however, goes to Fox Host Chris Payne — for him, it’s the first, last, and only refuge you need to know.
The new film American Sniper has been making its rounds, and it’s garnered deserved criticism. While discussing that well-earned criticism, Chris Payne said that liberals should treat Navy SEAL Chris Kyle as a hero, because he “saved the world” and uplifted millions from poverty.
Well alright then.
While talking about Kyle, Payne noted that “It’s a pretty simple thing, you watch the movie, he saved American lives” and that “And he went through a tough struggle to do it, but it was a job that had to be done.”
Normally, this would be a case of “heard it thousands of times before,” but Payne didn’t end there. He was, in fact, just getting started:
Look at the death toll that we had protecting people in a different country because that’s what America does. We’ve been the world’s policeman, and guess what’s happened over the time we’ve become the world’s policeman?
A billion people in other countries have moved into the middle class. We had India on TV earlier. If it wasn’t for Americans dying around the world, the rest of the world would be in abject poverty.
Payne concluded his . . . ahem . . . painfully stupid rant by saying that “we have saved the planet” and “and if we go away as [the world’s] policeman, it’s going to be hell to pay for everyone.”
“A billion people,” Payne claims, “have moved into the middle class.” Wow, a whole billion; with a world population of about 7 billion, and 5.6 billion of them — around 80% of the world’s population — living on less than 10 US$ a day, that’s a fantastic ratio. America does such good work, keeping those 5.6 billion people out of abject poverty.
In the mean time, the largest democracy in the world, with more cultural variation and languages than the subcontinent of Europe, with at least five major movie industries the size of Hollywood or larger (Bollywood, Tollywood, Lollywood, Kollywood, and Sandalwood), is only on TV because of the United States.
That kind of ethnocentric stupid should be criminal.
