KNOXVILLE, TN — Define “double standard.” White guy sees a large group of vociferous black people, they’re a “mob of violent animals.” A large group of white college kids causing similar havoc are “just having fun.” A white cop who chokes a black man minding his own business to death, listed as a homicide, doesn’t even get indicted. A cop choking a white kid to the point of discomfort gets immediately fired. Welcome to post-racial America.
As reported by local news station WBIR in April, at least 800 rowdy, white college students held an end of the year “celebration” in the street. “Celebration” in quotes, because it resulted in 15 arrests, thrown beer bottles, fights, and general vandalism. In short: Change the skin color, and Hannity would have called it a “riot.”
Some of the group of 800 people complained that the police were “a little rude,” shining lights in their faces. Which is how white people define the “nazi police state.” But at least one student, Jarod Dotson, arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct (an actual crime) got it a bit worse. A freelance photographer happened to be on scene, and caught this photograph:
The officer, 47-year-old Frank Phillips choked Dotson completely unconscious, and the other two officers cuffed him as he fell to the ground. It’s interesting to note that the photograph captured by freelancer John Messner didn’t even break i the United States; he wound up selling it to British tabloid the Daily Mail UK, which is something like their equivalent of Fox News. The story worked its way back to these shores afterward.
Phillips was fired within 24 hours of this incident, and the other two officers in the photograph were placed on leave without pay. So, let’s sum up:
- Jarod Dotson: White kid being unruly and committing a crime choked unconscious on camera. One cop immediately fired, two suspended.
- Eric Garner: Black man minding his own business and not committing a crime choked to death on camera. Nobody fired, no charges pressed.
Or, as the Supreme court said:
Thank God racism is OVER!
