There are few causes more thankless than helping those who cannot help themselves, society’s castaways. After just a few moments of searching, we here at AATTP were able to compile a very short and incomplete list of people, the homeless and elderly, who have died as a result of inadequate shelter this winter.

Four homeless dead from exposure in San Jose.
In Iowa, Steven Califf, 43, found dead of exposure in Sunset Marina while police wait on an autopsy to confirm another woman dead of exposure found in Centennial Park.
Pennsylvania resident 61-year-old Claudine Louise Murphy found dead in the woods of hypothermia.
A Boulder, CO man has been found dead of exposure.
CBS San Fransisco reports the fourth person to be discovered dead due to exposure in the Bay area.
The Chicago Sun Times reports the 14th death due to cold exposure of the season. Here is a list of those dead from cold exposure in Cook County Illinois:
◆ Jamie Hensley, 56, of Joliet, was found unresponsive outdoors Jan. 13 in the 3700 block of South Archer Avenue. He died of hypothermia, cold exposure and alcohol intoxication.
◆ Lynda Eads, 57, was found lying in the show outside her home in the 700 block of Southwest Highway in Worth on Jan. 9. She died of hypothermia, cold exposure and alcohol intoxication.
◆ Robert Sembrat, 55, was found dead in his Northfield home on Jan. 7th. Police could not immediately say if Sembrat’s home was heated.
◆ Andrea Ysaguirre, 66, died at Metro South Medical Center in Blue Island on Jan. 7. Ysaguirre, of the 12300 block of South Peoria in Calumet Park, died of cold exposure, heart disease, kidney disease and heart failure.
◆ Bernabe Garcia, 49, died in the 3600 block of West Palmer Street Jan. 7. Garcia, who was homeless, died of hypothermia, cold exposure, alcohol intoxication and heart disease.
◆ Elias Contreras, 80, was the first cold-related death of the year in Cook County and died at MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island Jan. 6. Contreras, of Blue Island, died of hypothermia, cold exposure, diabetes and heart disease.
◆ Thomas Kachlicki, 66, was found dead at his home Dec. 19 in the 4500 block of West Wrightwood Avenue. He died of hypothermia and cold exposure.
◆ William Buckley, 67, was found dead Dec. 17 by officers conducting a well-being check at his home in the 100 block of West 118th Street, authorities said. He died of hypothermia, cold exposure, and heart disease.
◆ Margie Chandler, 62, died at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center Dec. 12. An autopsy found she died from complications of hypothermia and cold exposure.
◆ Carolyn Wilkins, 61, died at Franciscan St. James Health in Chicago Heights Dec. 10. An autopsy found Wilkins, of the 1200 block of Damico Drive in Chicago Heights, died of heart disease, hypothermia and diabetes.
◆ David Kraft, 52, was found dead under a bridge Nov. 26 in the 3000 block of West Washington Street. Kraft, whose home address is unknown, died of hypothermia, cold exposure and alcoholism.
◆ Daniel Badillo, 50, was found in the 3100 block of West 99th Street and pronounced dead at St. Anthony Hospital on Nov. 24. An autopsy found he died of hypothermia, cold exposure and acute and chronic alcoholism
◆ Beverly Weaver, 64, was found dead in the 1500 block of West Lawrence Avenue on Oct. 25. An autopsy found she died of hypothermia, cold exposure and heart disease.
◆An unidentified man was found dead in the 3200 block of West Fullerton Avenue, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Preliminary findings state the cause of death was cold exposure and secondary heart attack.
