The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has released its report on the standoff at the Bundy ranch back in April, and it does not paint a flattering picture of Bundy and the “patriot” militias who flocked to his side to fend off the “lawless” federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in their attempt to “steal” Bundy’s land and cattle.
One of the most startling findings was that since President Obama took office, this anti-government movement has grown from 150 to more than 1,000 last year. Along with the growth in numbers, they have become increasingly willing to resort to violent confrontation with authorities.
As the FBI continues to investigate the Bundy incident, there have been several more confrontations involving the BLM in New Mexico, Utah, Texas and Idaho between armed militia and “sovereign citizens” and BLM agents performing their duties.
In Utah two men aimed a handgun toward BLM workers in a marked federal vehicle while holding up a sign that said, “You need to die.”
Of course the most well known of these recent events linked to the Bundy standoff took place in Las Vegas when Jerad and Amanda Miller, walked into a pizza parlor in June and executed two police officers eating lunch while shouting “this is revolution” before draping the bodies in a Gadsden flag and a swastika and fleeing to a nearby Walmart where they shot and killed an armed citizen who attempted to stop them. They ultimately committed suicide rather than surrender to the government that they hated so much.
The report also found that despite what we have been told, the standoff in Bunkerville was not a spontaneous occurrence, it was carefully planned ahead of time.
Ryan Payne a 30-year-old electrician and former soldier from Anaconda, Montana told the SPLC in a lengthy interview that he and Cliven Bundy had walked the public lands days before the BLM arrived in order to develop a plan to “defend” it, it was this early reconnaissance Payne said that allowed him to have snipers in place already when the standoff came to a climax.
“Not only did they take up the very best position to over-watch everything, they also had the high ground, they were fortified with concrete and pavement barriers, Payne boasted. “They had great lines of fire and then, when I sent in that other team, for counter-sniper positions, [the BLM agents] were completely locked down. They had no choice but to retreat.”
The report noted that these extremists are encouraged by politicians and commentators who should have been condemning them for their lawless actions instead led the cheering section for them while denigrating the BLM for enforcing legally obtained court orders.
The most chilling sentence in the report was one that read:
“This incident may have faded from public view, but if our government doesn’t pay attention, we will be caught off guard as much as the Bureau of Land Management was that day.”
