The Southern Poverty Law Center has spoken up on potential GOP 2016 presidential candidate Ben Carson, and it’s not too flattering.
Citing the neurosurgeon’s extreme anti-LGBT views, the SPLC has placed Carson on its “extreme watch list.”
The SPLC targeted Carson after he began speaking to “right-wing and hate group gatherings” after his rise to prominence in 2013, where he compared gay people with “pedophiles” on a few occasions. The SPLC points out that Carson compares the U.S. to Nazi Germany and “endorses biblical economic practices for 21st century America.”
The SPLC also cited some of Carson’s remarks during speeches and appearances on cable news. One notable occasion was in October 2013 where he gave a speech to the Values Voter Summit, proclaiming Obamacare is “the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery.”
Also noted are his numerous slams against gay marriage. One such example can be found in the following passage from Carson’s book, America the Beautiful:
“[I]f we can redefine marriage as between two men or two women or any other way based on social pressures as opposed to between a man and a woman, we will continue to redefine it in any way that we wish, which is a slippery slope with a disastrous ending, as witnessed in the dramatic fall of the Roman Empire.”
According to Mediaite, the SPLC’s “extremist watch list” includes neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
