Voters in Montana are speaking out in an increasingly-popular online petition asking Montana Governor Steve Bullock to encourage Big Lebowski star Jeff Bridges to run for Senate.
Democrats have been scrambling for a candidate after it was revealed that Senator John Walsh took the low road in his time at the United States Army War College and plagiarized his Master’s thesis. Walsh copied a whole page nearly verbatim from a Harvard paper, and all six of his conclusions are copied from a Carnegie Endowment for International Peace document with zero attribution. Walsh officially ended his re-election campaign on Thursday.
Bridges, who toured with Governor Bullock to promote the “Breakfast After the Bell” campaign, a part of the federally backed No Kid Hungry program, in schools, is the perfect choice of candidate, says the petition. Lizbeth Pratt writes,
Jeff is a great person. He has loved Montana and all it represents since he first set up residence in Park County four decades ago. He has great name recognition! Charisma! Brains! He’s internationally renowned but he is also highly accessible. We need The Dude to be Montana’s next U.S. Senator!
The petition asks the Governor to “Encourage Jeff Bridges, Park County Resident, to run for the Montana U.S. Senate.” The idea is gathering steam. Almost 1,000 supporters have signed in support of having “The Dude” as their Senatorial candidate.
In addition, a Facebook page called “Jeff Bridges for Montana U.S. Senator” has gathered over 3,000 likes.
Bullock, however, can not name a candidate. The Montana Democratic Party is meeting on August 16 to determine who will replace Walsh in the race. They expect to have a new candidate nominated by the end of the day.
Will “The Dude” run? Only time will tell.
Until then, “The Dude abides. I don’t know about you but I take comfort in that. It’s good knowin’ he’s out there. The Dude. Takin’ ‘er easy for all us sinners. Shoosh. I sure hope he makes the finals.”
