Oklahomans are benefiting greatly from Obamacare, according to a new report from the Department of Health and Human Services. The report discovered that Oklahomans are paying an average of $75 per month when they buy plans through the marketplace, which HHS set up for the state. According to NewsOK, HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said:
“What we’re finding is that the marketplace is working for Oklahomans. Consumers have more choices, and they’re paying less for their premiums. When there is choice and competition, everybody benefits.”
Choice and competition is the problem Republicans are having; many keep saying that the best way to fix our health insurance system is to encourage competition by allowing people to buy insurance across state lines. While that, too, might help, it’s not the solution, and they still don’t say what their alternative plan would be, except for that.
The NewsOK article said that premiums fell about 73% for Oklahomans who chose plans with tax credits, which is what brought their premiums down to around $75 per month. The average premium before the tax credits is roughly $277 per month. 74% of all enrollees had premiums of $100 per month or less.
So it seems that Obamacare is working even in solid-red Oklahoma, as it is in other red states like Idaho, North Carolina and Kentucky.
Furthermore, UnitedHealth Group said, back in April, that it would likely join more exchanges in 2015. They like the size of the market for Obamacare, and they like the fact that consumers like the silver plans the best. Despite a 7.8% fall in revenue in the first quarter of 2014, they think Obamacare might ultimately be good for their business.
The law has its flaws, for sure. But many of the doomsday prophecies that Republicans predicted haven’t yet come to pass, and it’s looking less and less likely that those prophecies will ever happen. Oklahoma is a good example of the success of Obamacare, since it’s solidly red and rejected the Medicaid expansion.
