Two unidentified men demonstrated the sort of responsible gun ownership that we all know and love when they opened fire on one another early Sunday, hitting nine other people that didn’t include either gunman.
The two suspects, whose gunfight took place on New Orleans’ famed Bourbon Street, didn’t appear to be wounded and are being sought by the New Orleans PD. The shooting happened around 2:45am local time, after the men got into an argument that devolved quickly to gunfire. The bullets they fired ricocheted off well-known New Orleans locations, like Pat O’Brien’s bar and jazz venue Preservation Hall, wounding nine people.
The police responded to the shooting within seconds, and according to WWLTV, they were reviewing the footage of the chaos:
NOPD officials said they’ve got a lot of video footage of the shooting and several eyewitnesses, and although they haven’t released the names of the two gunmen, police say they have a pretty good idea who these guys are and expect to make an arrest soon.
In a statement released by the mayor’s office, Mayor Mitch Landrieu said the “number one priority is to keep New Orleans safe.”
“These kinds of incidents will not go unanswered,” he said. “NOPD was in the immediate vicinity at the time of the incident, and I am confident that between video evidence and eyewitness accounts, we will bring the perpetrators to justice. Our crime fighting efforts have brought murders in the city of New Orleans to a historic nearly 30-year low. But on days like today, the statistics don’t matter because every life is precious – from the 9th Ward to the French Quarter. We will not rest until every corner of this city is safe.”
One witness told WWLTV that he heard an argument before shots were fired. The witness said that the shooter “pulled the gun out and started shooting at the guy, then turned around on the crowd and started shooting at us.”
Police report that two of the victims were in critical condition and six others were stable, but the condition of the ninth victim is unknown.
NOPD department superintendent, Ronal Serpas, told reporters that “Nine people were shot as a result of two cowardly young men trying to hurt each other,” because the pair “chose to settle their dispute with no regard to others.”
What do you expect? The NRA would regard this as a perfect illustration of the Second Amendment. Can you see the Second Amendment in this incident? It’s written in the street gutters with the blood of the victims who were shot.
