As we trundle along down the path our government put us on — Sequestration — we’re starting to see just how far-reaching the impact of senselessly gutting our budget so we placate Ayn Rand-obsessed fiscal sociopaths really is. The administration did its level best to warn everyone that some unintended and really devastating consequences could arise over our ham-fisted attempt to squeeze more blood from stones in terms of our budget, but at the time many felt they were overplaying their hand.
$80 billion, which is what the sequester cuts were, was sold to us by the right-wing as being a “no-brainer” kind of cut. After all, how could we not afford to slice such a small sliver out of our giant budget that stretches into the numbers that have Trill in front of them? Well, the problem is we cut without discretion instead of finding a few billion we could surgically slice out of the larger resource-intensive pieces of our government, and now a new study shows that up to 20% of our leading research scientists are considering moving out of The United States to countries that haven’t seen their scientific funding smashed into little pieces.
Does it seem especially ironic and sad that at a time when we’re already falling behind in green energy production and a whole host of other scientific endeavors, at a time when we don’t even have our own space shuttle program anymore…that we’re going to start seeing fewer scientists around?
