In a stunning report aired by Dallas-Fort Worth CBS 11 News, students are alleging the school has engaged in racist behavior after fifth-graders at a Fort Worth elementary school told their parents a teacher separated them by race, and then insulted them and their families. An investigation has been opened. The Fort Worth Independent School district said it is aware of the allegations and would take appropriate action if needed after the conclusion of its investigation.
Sandra Lee said her daughter said the incident occurred Friday during music class at Hazel Harvey Peace Elementary School. According to Lee, the teacher told student, “Members of the class are stupid, and I know where y’all from” prior to separating the black and white kids. Allegedly the teacher continued his rant by stating, “I can tell neither one of y’all get punished at home.”
Another student told the station that he and some of his classmates were then told to leave the classroom. Lee, who went to the school Monday to talk to administrators, said she was told all of the students gave administrators written statements about the incident. She believes the incident was intentionally discriminatory, saying,
“It was racist. Everything that was going on was racist. At that school, at that classroom, with that teacher, it was very racist.”
In what may prove to be a disturbing pattern, one parent said this was not the first incident like this involving the music teacher.
Another concerned parent, Gloria Popoca, said several students in her daughter’s class alerted the administration earlier in the school year after they were allegedly shown a movie that contained profanity and violence by the same teacher.
It would certainly appear that the school district is aware of inappropriate behavior by this teacher and has allowed him to continue in his position. However, school spokesman Clint Bond emailed a statement saying “Campus and District leadership have been aware of the allegations since last Friday. Once the facts are known, appropriate action will be taken.”
AATTP will report back once more information is available.
