Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst claims to be a man who cares about justice. All the talk about “getting tough on crime” is old hat to him. Oh, and he LOVES the death penalty (surprise, he’s a Texas Republican).
But don’t accuse him of not having compassion for people who are victims of the Texas criminal justice system — well, if they’re members of his own family at least. That’s what prompted Dewhurst to call the Allen Police Department to get his “step-niece-in-law” Ellen Bevers after her August 3 arrest for shoplifting.
Although Dewhurst didn’t do anything illegal, his opponent in the state Republican primary said the call suggests that “Dewhurst believes he and his family are above the law.”
Wonkette summed it up beautifully:
This would only be an abuse of power if Dewhurst asked for special treatment, which he very explicitly does not. But the tone of the guy at the end of the line? We’ve worked for that guy. We don’t especially like that guy. And having been a call center monkey, we really don’t like having that guy call us on the Customer Care Line.
