It would seem congratulations are in order to the Texas Republicans for removing anti-gay language from their platform. But hold your applause–the party has replaced it with statements just as, if not more, offensive.
The GOP plank previously proclaimed that “homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit. Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God.”
Now, the party has outdone itself with an early draft of a new platform, as reported by The Houston Chronicle, in which State Republicans will endorse ex-gay therapy for “patients who are seeking escape from the homosexual lifestyle.”
Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle, in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include homosexual couples. We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin. Additionally, we oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values. We recognize the legitimacy and value of counseling which offers reparative therapy and treatment to patients who are seeking escape from the homosexual lifestyle. No laws or executive orders shall be imposed to limit or restrict access to this type of therapy.”
That sounds like a free pass for the good citizens of Texas to disenfranchise and discriminate to their hearts’ content.
It’s possible the new ex-gay therapy policy is in response to legislation passed in New Jersey and California protecting minors from the detrimental treatment. A study by the American Psychological Association shows that efforts to redefine one’s sexual orientation are not only invalid but traumatic, leading to shame, suicidal thoughts, and nervous breakdowns.
The Lone Star Republicans will undoubtedly continue to development their platform, seeking new and more creative ways to repress and discriminate against the LGBT community. Don’t plan on getting married there any time soon.
