The “law and order” crowd that is angry with President Obama for enforcing the law that requires that children from Central America seeking asylum must be given a hearing have taken to appointing themselves “Border Patrol Vigilantes” and we now have at least 10 armed private “militias” patrolling the Texas border in an effort to keep these brown children out of the country.
Oathkeepers, Three Percenters and Patriots are among the groups who are actively recruiting like-minded individuals to travel to their state and join them in “securing” the border.
Members of the group have provided more than 30 photos to the San Antonio Express News showing them wearing masks, camouflage, tactical gear and carrying semi-automatic weapons, Their faces are blurred so that no one could be identified by “gang members and drug cartels.”
One such photo shows a Border Patrol Agent leaning into one of the “militia” vehicles pointing something out on a map. This appears to be a violation of Border Patrol policy which does not “endorse or support any private group or organization from taking matters into their own hands as it could have disastrous personal and public safety consequences,” although officials have declined to comment on the photo.
Many of these individuals are fresh off participation in the standoff at Cliven Bundy’s Arizona ranch where they dared BLM agents to engage in a firefight over the illegal trespass of Bundy’s cattle on publicly-owned lands.
Barbie Rogers, founder of the Patriots Information Hotline which is coordinating recruiting efforts, said that these “teams” are stationed mostly on private ranch land from El Paso to Laredo to the Rio Grande Valley.
A Facebook post by KC Massey, one of these vigilantes described their “rules of engagement:
“If in fear of bodily injury, weapons free, if fired upon, return fire. Real simple. We are not worried about an ‘International’ incident if they shoot at us.”
State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, issued a statement saying that “pointing guns at children solves nothing,” going on to say:
“Local law enforcement and federal border patrol agents have been clear. The presence of these outside independent militia groups does nothing to secure the border; it only creates an unsafe situation for law enforcement officials that are protecting our communities. Unfortunately, the vile rhetoric of my opponent inspires misguided efforts.”
Chris Davis, a 37 year-old truck driver from Von Ormy, who was discharged from the Army “under other than honorable conditions in lieu of court martial” in 2001, calls himself the commander of “Operation Secure Our Border: Laredo Sector,” claims that the group will protect the border in a “legal and lawful manner” ignoring the fact that they have no legal authorization to do any such thing. He was also seen in a Youtube video that has since been removed saying, “You see an illegal. You point your gun dead at him, right between his eyes, and you say, ‘Get back across the border or you will be shot.'”
