While our eyes are on the November elections, the Tennessee GOP is launching a full frontal assault on women’s rights with an amendment that would pave the way for banning all abortions in the state.
Planned Parenthood of Middle and Eastern Tennessee (PPMET) found the following passage particularly alarming.
“Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or require the funding of an abortion. The people retain the right through their elected state representatives and state senators to enact, amend, or repeal statutes regarding abortion, including, but not limited to, circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest or when necessary to save the life of the mother.”
That’s right. If the Tennessee GOP have their way, no girl or woman will be allowed to have an abortion: Not even if she’s 13 years old, has a life-threatening medical condition, was raped by her own father, and the baby has no chance of living after birth.
PPMET President, Jeff Teague told Mother Jones:
“It [Amendment 1] will basically just open the floodgates for the General Assembly to pass any kind of restriction if the amendment passes. We think they probably have a long list of things they’re going to pass.”
So, other than wanting to keep women barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen waiting on their husbands, why does the Tennessee GOP want to enact such brutally draconian abortion bans? Because… wait for this … and please don’t laugh, this is not a laughing matter:
They worry that the state of Tennessee has become an “Abortion Destination!” Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.
And gosh dang it, why must everything this writer does have to become trendy. Every year, she and her husband visit Graceland to pay tribute to Elvis, grab some BBQ in Memphis, and then head on over to the Planned Parenthood in Nashville for an abortion. But the last time, she couldn’t even get an appointment because the clinic was so crowded. This jaded hipster wearies of always having to live on the cutting edge.
But seriously… David Fowler, president of the Family Action Council of Tennesee (FACT) insists that because all the other surrounding states in the South East still have “abortion-specific” waiting period and informed consent laws in effect, Tennessee has become the “Abortion Destination” of choice.
“I believe that is one of the reasons why Tennessee has become an ‘Abortion Destination’ in the South East. According to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued just last November of 2013, Tennessee now has the third highest percentage of abortions on out-of-state women in the nation.”
And — good gawd! — these hordes of abortion-seeking women are crossing the border “in droves!”
“In other words, almost one fourth of the abortions in Tennessee are performed on women who come here from out of state. And that’s particularly true in West Tennessee, where women from Mississippi come across the border in droves.”
Tennessee, the abortion state!
Watch Fowler explain how Amendment 1 will solve the problem of Tennessee being an “Abortion Destination.”
