A 15 year-old-boy is on the run, reported to have gone into hiding after holding a young female classmate and her mother hostage, and then throwing boiling water in the girl’s face after she ‘unfriended’ him in Facebook earlier this week.
Police reported that the girl said the young man was acquainted with the family and that the father, a teacher, was paying for the boy to attend a local school. His daughter accepted the youth’s friend request on the social media site, and said, “I accepted his (Facebook) friend request a year ago because I found him decent then.” She added, “But of late he had become abusive and so I ‘unfriended’ him last week.”
Local police searched the home of the suspect, but as yet have been unable to locate him to make an arrest.
The girl, unnamed in the police report, is in the hospital receiving treatment for burns covering the right side of her face.
India has a long history of leniency towards these kinds of attack on women which are aimed at disfiguring them for life. Disfigurement as a result of a woman rejecting a man’s advances is so common that the country is taking tentative steps toward restricting the sale of acids generally used in the attacks.
