Rick Warren, founder of the Saddleback Church and diet guru sat down with Piers Morgan Friday night to discuss, among other things, same-sex marriage. He is, of course, opposed to it but still claims to be all for equality in all forms.
Misquoting Orwell he said, “Don’t take a term and and make it something different. Orwell talked about doublespeak, where words mean the exact opposite of what they used to mean.” Orwell never mentioned doublespeak.
His main argument against same-sex marriage is of course his insistence that marriage was created by God as outlined in the Bible. The argument doesn’t stand even in the Biblical context since by Biblical standards marriage was not between one man and one woman, it was between one man and as many women as he could afford to support.
Claiming that marriage comes from the Bible is also a failed argument since marriage has been around far longer than the 2,000 years that the Bible has been around. The fact of the matter is that marriage is a legal contract, and requires no ceremony of any kind, it only requires the signatures of the consenting parties on the marriage contract, or as it is more commonly known, the marriage license.
The simple truth is that Warren harbors a bias against gays and in favor of white male privilege as he exposed when he said, “Tolerance used to mean we treat each other with mutual respect even if you have major disagreements. Today tolerance has been changed to mean all ideas are equally valid. Well, that’s nonsense. All ideas are not equally valid.”
Fear not though, Warren has given his word that he will never be convinced to support gay rights because as he says, “I fear the disapproval of God more than I fear your disapproval or the disapproval of society.”
