Carolyn Compton and Page Price have been in a committed relationship for three years. Now, because a McKinney, Texas judge is trying to force his morality on the couple, Compton is at risk of losing her children unless she complies with the judge’s ludicrous demands and moves out of the home she shares with her lesbian partner. From Think Progress:
According to Price, Judge John Roach, a Republican who presides over a state trial court in McKinney, Texas, placed a so-called “morality clause” in Compton’s divorce papers. This clause forbids Compton having a person that she is not related to “by blood or marriage” at her home past 9pm when her children are present. Since Texas will not allow Compton to marry her partner, this means that she effectively cannot live with her partner so long as she retains custody over her children. Invoking the “morality clause,” Judge Roach gave Price 30 days to move out of Compton’s home.
Not surprisingly, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened in Texas due to a judge citing a “morality cause.” According the the Dallas Voice:
The situation is similar to a 2011 Houston case where a judge ruled that William Flowers couldn’t leave his children alone with his partner, Jim Evans, because they were not related by blood or adoption, despite the couple being married. Had he ruled under the morality clause, the partner would have had to move out.
Compton is appealing the decision. If you’d like to help the couple with their legal fees so they can fight this blatant homophobic targeting, a fundraiser for Page Price and Carolyn Compton’s attorney fees is 3-6 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Eden Lounge, 2911 Main Street.
