This moving video is an account given by teacher Sandy Hook teacher Kaitlin Roig-Debellis of what it was like to be a survivor of the attack in the immediate aftermath. She speaks of walking around in a fog and singing “Amazing Grace” over and over. She tells how she hid her class in the bathroom for nearly an hour to keep them safe and brushes off any attempt to label her a hero saying, “I’m not a hero, I did exactly what anyone else would have done on that day.”
She is wrong — she is a hero, she did not do what anyone else would do. Some would not have been able to keep a cool head and remove those children from danger, many would have panicked and frozen, she did not.
Listen to her own words in the video below and hope that one day these heinous assaults are a thing only of distant memory.
