The current political climate of the right is one that is increasingly wrought with paranoia, and nowhere is this more evident than on the topic of gun control. Any step towards making guns and gun sales more secure is immediately equated to Obama kicking in your door and stealing your armaments.
Thankfully, a federal judge handed down a sizable win for common sense on Thursday, ruling that Colorado’s new gun laws, which include mandated background checks and 15-round limits on magazines, must be upheld.
U.S. District Chief Judge Marcia Krieger issued a 50-page ruling that maintained that background checks and magazine sizes do not infringe on the constitutional right to bear arms. Krieger noted that neither law hindered a person’s ability to defend against a threat.
Of the many law enforcement officials called to testify, none were able to identify a single instance in which they were involved where a single civilian fired more than 15 shots in self-defense.
While we respect the judge’s ruling today, we believe that it is plainly wrong on the law and on the facts….John Hickenlooper knows that the Bloomberg anti-gun laws are a failure.
Naturally, the plaintiffs pledged to appeal the ruling as many times as it took, though it will likely accomplish nothing. Eileen McCarron of the group Colorado Ceasefire did not mince words in a statement regarding the lawsuit.
This was a politically-motivated lawsuit that has been grasping at straws from day one, these laws are reasonable protections against gun violence that many states have adopted and have repeatedly passed the test of constitutionality.
Or let’s just keep spending the tax money you teabaggers say you hate to pay on frivolous lawsuits.
