Real Time With Bill Maher recently featured a video by Alexandra Pelosi in which Tea Party supporters could not name a single government program that they would curtail in the name of cutting federal spending.
Tea Party supporters are of course well known for their passionate belief that the federal government should cut spending, so it was a little more than ironic that they could not name a single program to eradicate. Social Security, Medicare, education, unemployment, defense, and hurricane relief all got a quick “no” from the Tea Party supporters when asked in the video if they would cut those.
Now, welfare did not come up in the video, and we suspect that it would have received a resounding “yes!” from the folks in the video. However, unemployment is considered to be a part of welfare spending – over 25% of it, in fact – and it received a “no”.
We suspect that the only unanimous “yes” answer from many of the Tea Party supporters in the video would have been if “welfare for non-white people” had come up as a choice to cut. Too bad that the majority of Tea Party supporters are unaware that the non-unemployment portion of the federal pie that goes towards welfare is 7 to 8% of total federal spending, and most of that goes towards the feeding and housing of children, the elderly, and the working poor, and then a miniscule amount is left from that which actually goes to any of the stereotypical “welfare queens” that Tea Party types like to rant about.
Another good question to ask Tea Party sympathizers would be “what portion of federal government spending do you believe goes to lazy, non-working non-white people?” We’re guessing that we’d get ridiculous answers like “half of it!,” or “most of it!”
We also wonder what the responses would have been if “corporate welfare” had come up as a choice to cut, since, between that and corporate tax loopholes, corporations are benefiting at a much greater rate from the U.S. financial system than poor people who are on welfare are, on a dollar per dollar basis.
Maher said it best in this video:
They are complete idiots. Whenever I hear, ‘Oh, you know what? We need a government as good as the people,’ the people are worse. People don’t know anything.
