Every day, we see signs of the right-wing war on education. If you haven’t noticed, just look at the people who want to be on the Texas school board! With American students losing ground in math, reading, and science, it’s important that we offer them a proper education.
One sign that Bill Nye is correct that we need to focus on properly teaching kids about science is a recent poll conducted by the National Science Foundation. The survey, which included over 2,200 people, asked nine questions about physical and biological science–and the majority received a failing grade with only an average of 6.5 correct answers.
Given the right-wing anti-science mentality, it is not surprising that fewer than half of the respondents knew that human beings evolved from earlier species of animals but what is really surprising is that only 74 percent knew about heliocentrism. That’s right, folks, one in four don’t know the earth revolves around the sun.
Despite these frightening answers, only one in three said that science needs more funding from the government–and we do, before we become a society that thinks the sun revolves around the earth.
