Apparently we are a nation of heathens who practice human sacrifice. Yep! That little gold nugget of a revelation came from none other than Dr. Ben Carson. Carson, according to Right Wing Watch, was talking to DoveTV host Perry Atkinson, who’d said that if America could end abortion, then everything else would fall into place because God would finally be interested in helping us.

That doesn’t sound like something an allegedly loving god would do. The fact of the matter is that this isn’t a Christian country, and not everybody here believes there even is a god, let alone the God of the Christian Bible. Someone like Dr. Carson really ought to understand the possible reasons behind a woman’s decision to have an abortion, and the fact that it is her decision, and hers alone.
Many conservative Christians think that certain problems aren’t problems if Christians do it. Earlier in June, the House Judiciary Committee was holding a hearing on the state of religious freedom in this country, and that hearing revealed what many of us already knew: Some things are abhorrent when others do it, but it’s different, and therefore okay, when Christians do it. This is because Christians are merely trying to put things right in the world (like defend the lives of unborn babies), but others are trying to coerce, control, and even destroy.
The website On the Issues noted that Dr. Carson thinks that Tea Partiers reject spoon-fed bias from the media. Considering the sheer numbers of them that pay attention only to Fox News, and how Fox News viewers are the least informed out there, this is utter nonsense. Tea Partiers get spoon-fed the most biased information out there. If Fox News were to repeat what Dr. Carson said about abortion being human sacrifice, we’d hear every Tea Party-aligned politician out there saying the exact same thing, along with their voters.
This is a man who believes that religion is what makes humans reasonable, according to the same webpage from On the Issues. However, human sacrifice was religious, too. The Science Channel’s website lists cultures that practiced human sacrifice. The Aztecs’ religion sometime called for human sacrifice. The early Canaanites, who lived in what is now Syria, Israel Jordan, and Lebanon, sometimes sacrificed children to the god Moloch.
Religion has been at the heart of countless wars and bloodshed, including Christianity. That’s not “reasonable.” In fact, it often appears as if religion is what makes people unreasonable. One only has to look at the religious right’s attitude towards Islam to see that. Christianity, however, is the one right, good, and true religion, and all others are either pale imitations, or the harbingers of evil. It’s one thing to look at other religions and feel like they ought to be condemned for their beliefs. However, Dr. Carson needs someone to shove the truth in his face, because Christianity is no better.
