Without naming the president specifically, Rubio went on to suggest that the rise of ISIS/ISIL was the direct result of his decision to abide by the terms negotiated under the Bush administration and remove our troops from Iraq:
“When the U.S. pulled out of Iraq it allowed Maliki, then the prime minister, to go whole hog on his persecution of Sunnis which then created fertile ground for the sort of insurgency we now see.”
Rubio went on to say, correctly, that there are Sunnis in Iraq now who hate the Shia dominated government so much that they are willing to align themselves with ISIS/ISIL, even thought they do not agree with their extremism.
In the end, Rubio let slip what he’s really interested in — a permanent base of operations in the area, something that will only fan the flames further. It is our presence and our meddling that keeps feeding the extremists with new converts to their radical brand of Islam.
