On Tuesday, Tea Partiers gathered at the St. Clairsville, Ohio courthouse to complain about Muslims, Barack Obama, and to engage in the sort of hyper-nationalistic fear mongering to which we have become accustomed.
The event was sponsored by Murray Energy. If that name sounds familiar, that is because Robert Murray was caught engaging in some rather shady regarding elections. Murray is currently facing a lawsuit over the firing of an employee after she refused to make contributions to Murray’s favorite candidates.
Employees received letters like this:
However, this more recent attempt to use the threat of losing employment to coerce employees into supporting Murray’s Chosen is nothing new.
In 2012 numerous Murray employees said they were forced to attend a Mitt Romney event without being compensated. “Just for the record, if we did not go, we knew what would happen,” one miner told a local radio station.
“There’s a lot of coercion,” another worker said. “I just wanted to work, but you feel this constant pressure that, if you don’t contribute, your job’s at stake. You’re compelled to do this whether you want to or not.”
Again, Murray had his horde of rather unenthusiastic-looking employees along at this corporate-sponsored “grassroots” event.
One speaker was refreshingly honest for one brief, beautiful moment, however. The speaker explained to the crowd, despite repeated and numerous assertions from the Tea Party that it is a bipartisan “grassroots” movement, he admitted: “We’re not bipartisan. We know what we believe. We know who we want to vote for.”
He laid out the choices for the crowd of geriatric Caucasians: “If you want to vote for the lying side, vote for the D’s. If you vote for people who’ll tell you the truth, you vote for the R’s.”
He continued, explaining that “We have a narcissistic liar in the White House. He has not told the truth to the American people about anything.” He added that, “This man wants to sit on top of the tower” and that “anything that gets in [Obama’s] way, he’s going to get rid of.”
