Forget Obama’s college records; where are Scott Walker‘s records?
Walker is the GOP candidate de jour; he managed to pull off a victory in the Iowa strawpoll and leads the other candidates in multiple national polls. He’s also, like most “good Christians” on the right, a pathological liar, and dropped out of college with a supposed GPA of little over 2.50.
Of course, anyone who watches the man closely knows that he’s a college dropout. Grade inflation can produce some spectacularly stupid results — see Bush II — but Walker doesn’t even appear to benefit from that.
Walker attended Catholic Marquette University in Milwaukee and left before earning a degree. During an interview with Dana Loesch at CPAC, he pandered to the people who are skeptical of Obama’s history, saying that:
Referring to the stories about the Wisconsin governor’s college days, Loesch told Walker, “You’ve already been more vetted than the commander-in-chief.”
“Yeah,” Walker responded. “And more written about my college days than the president. I unsealed my records!”
Except, you know, for the part where he didn’t.
Politifact Wisconsin followed up on this claim only to find that it’s a confabulation; in 2010, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tried to obtain Walker’s college records from Catholic Marquette. Despite the two other candidates agreeing and releasing their records, Walker did not.
He did, however, release “a letter from Marquette that showed he attended the school for four years, from 1986 to 1990, and would have needed to stay there for at least another year to get a degree.”
In 2013, Politifact Wisconsin still hadn’t received any documents. And while Politifact was able to determine that Walker was never expelled, and that he voluntarily withdrew, they were still absent any actual records.
This continued right up through to 2015:
When we contacted the governor’s office for this fact check, spokeswoman Laurel Patrick forwarded us a copy of that letter.
When we asked if that meant there had been no unsealing of documents, she replied by saying:
“This effectively unseals his records, which is what he said. It gives Marquette University authorization to provide information about his record.”
But the limited comments Walker allowed Marquette to make about his record, of course, are far from any unsealing of the records themselves.
It is more akin to a statement that you paid your taxes on time, rather than producing the returns themselves.
To quote Politicus USA:
In other words, Walker has continued to insist he attended Marquette University from 1986 to 1990, that he left in good standing without any personal conduct issues. All the information he has authorized the university to release, testifies to these facts. But he has not released, and continues to refuse to release, the actual records.
And since, contrary to the facts, he has said he has released his records, but has not in fact released any records, PolitiFact Wisconsin says, “We rate Walker’s statement False.”
Walker’s campaign continues to insist that Walker left college with a GPA of 2.59, or roughly a C+, but we have no way to know if that’s true. And while a 2.59 is nothing special — my final GPA was 3.68, and I’m just a blogger on the Internet, not the governor of a state — it seems to suggest that he wasn’t as thorough in college as he was in high school.
Walker certain doesn’t act intelligent. Maybe it’s a show, trying to appeal to a group of people he holds in open contempt — it wouldn’t be a first for the right.
Walker, as Politicus USA points out, has also been caught lying before. He lied when he said that 146,795 jobs was equivalent to the 250,000 jobs he promised to create. He lied when he concocted the story about a Teacher of the Year who got canned by a union. What’s to keep us from thinking that his GPA isn’t a more fitting 2.0? Or even a 1.0?
Why should we trust anything he says when he accuses President Obama of hiding the same things that he’s hiding?
Like I said when I opened the piece: Forget Obama’s college records. Where are Walkers? Just what is Walker hiding?
