Jon Stewart took on those who are disappointed that we are not going to leap into war with Syria on the Daily Show Monday night expressing his confusion as to why so many are so upset at the prospect of a peaceful settlement of the situation. He said to them, “We managed not to have a war with somebody! Why can’t you take no war for an answer?!”
First Stewart has some fun with Lindsay Graham and his outrage that we are not going to war playing a quick clip of Graham saying “this is a debacle,” and then mockingly imitating him exaggerating Graham’s somewhat effeminate demeanor and vocal inflections. He plays a little more of the clip in which Graham says, “I wanted to strike Assad to punish him,” to which Stewart responded, “I wanted to tie him up and spank his taut Syrian…well I’m getting the vapors I must be…oh lord.”
As he plays a series of political pundits decrying the fact that it appears we are going to handle a volatile situation without resorting to violence and then asks, “What am I missing? We might contain a dictator’s chemical weapons stockpile without having to kill innocent civilians in the process or invading a country and there’s only two explanations for how this fellow there the Wall Street Journal’s Paul Gigot, has never seen a fiasco like this from a U.S. President, A) he’s only six months old, he’s one of them Benjamin Button type dudes ‘I’ve never seen anything like this cause I’m a baby’ or B) you worked for Reagan.”
Jon can always be counted on to find and point out the absurdities in the world of politics but in the case of our failure to go to war with Syria he really isn’t needed, the insanity is right out there in the open every day on the TV. Turn to any news channel and you will find these talking heads and their guests, officials from our government and political pundits unabashedly slamming the administration for not getting us into another war. Will we ever regain our national sanity? Did we ever have it?
