Democrat Elizabeth Colbert-Busch went head-to-head with Republican Mark Sanford, both battling for the South Carolina congressional seat left by Tim Scott, who replaced Jim DeMint in the Senate. The consensus is overwhelming that Colbert-Busch, sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, scored the zinger of the night. Referring to a married Sandford’s notorious tryst with a lover in Argentina, she said,
When we talk about fiscal spending and we talk about protecting the taxpayers, it doesn’t mean you take the money we saved and leave the country for a personal purpose.
Sanford disappeared for several days in 2009, only to be found in South America carrying on an extramarital affair with his mistress. The sordid tale made national news and severely hindered his political career. The vote in the heavily Republican South Carolina district will be held in just a few days on May 7th.
