On December 14, 2012, twenty first graders and six adults were Second Amendmented to death in less than 11 minutes by Adam Lanza.
Lanza grabbed three guns from his house–a semi-automatic Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle and two pistols. After killing his mother in their home, Lanza moved on to Sandy Hook Elementary. Once at the school, he blasted his way through a window with the Bushmaster rifle to bypass the locked doors. Lanza proceeded through the school, indiscriminately killing those who crossed his path, finally taking his own life as police closed in.
Lanza, a former Sandy Hook student, had never given any indication that he was capable of such a reprehensible act–though it was planned ahead of time. Lanza’s motives, even after exhaustive investigation, remain a mystery.
A report, released by the Connecticut State Attorney’s office, states that The evidence clearly shows that the shooter planned his actions, including the taking of his own life, but there is no clear indication why he did so, or why he targeted Sandy Hook Elementary School.”
The report paints a terrifying picture of Lanza’s mental state leading up to the shooting. The documents reveal that Adam Lanza had Asperger’s Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism. Lanza did not like loud noises or light. He didn’t like being in a crowd. All of this began presenting significant problems by late middle school, so Lanza began receiving tutoring and home schooling. By ninth grade, he shut himself in his bedroom all day playing video games. Lanza did not allow his mother or anyone else in his room. He hated holiday decorations, changed his clothes obsessively, and abhorred being touched.
Also detailed in the report are Lanza’s personal belongings– some of which are horrifying, others mundane. In Lanza’s room, they found a Christmas check from his mother to purchase a CZ 83 firearm (because there’s no better gift for your mentally disabled son than more weapons!). Lanza also had an extensive collection of newspaper clippings from various school shootings and photographs of what appears to be dead humans–blood-soaked and covered in plastic.
Lanza’s computer contained evidence of disturbing activity as well. Lanza had bookmarked a number of web pages relating to firearms, politics, mass murder, ammunition, and the military. He had two videos showing suicide by Second Amendment and multiple photos of him holding a gun to his own head. Lanza kept a spreadsheet documenting mass murders, multiple movies depicting mass shootings, and perhaps most disturbing of all–documents about pedophilia and advocating for the rights of pedophiles. No child pornography was found.
Lanza’s video games were largely innocuous–Mario, Dance Dance Revolution, etc…but one stood out: a game called School Shooting, in which–well, you get the idea…
A gun locker was found inside Lanza’s house, open with no sign of break-in. Lanza left 1,600 rounds of ammunition behind in the house, and specifically chose not to take lower-capacity magazines with him (but of course, we don’t need to limit magazine capacity, do we?). Multiple NRA certificates and guides belonging to Adam and his mother were found. All guns and ammunition, including those used to take 26 innocent lives, appear to have been legally purchased by his mother.
