Houston, we have a problem.
Playing off the plot of the popular new movie Gravity, SNL showed two astronauts untethered.
They call into command headquarters and no one is there. Except an elderly man cleaning the control panels. And later a woman with broken English, also on the janitorial crew, looking to get a job for her son who loves science fiction movies.
Okay Neil deGrasse Tyson, famous and personable astrophysicist, has questioned the accuracy of the movie.
The reality is the federal government has been shut down, partially, helter-sketler- by a group of people whose very job is to keep our system funded, operating and working toward the public good.
Just one furloughed worker, and there are 800,000, sends immediate economic shock waves into their immediate community. Furthering weakening the overall fragile economy.
The GOP has not only taken our government hostage but, in a crude legerdemain, pulled focus away from the important issues bearing down on our country:
Jobs, climate change, banks that continue to grow and fail.
Just to cite a few problems among an ocean of need.
But for a moment, sit back and see how the shutdown is affecting our space program through the lens of SNL.
