One minute after midnight Monday morning, same sex marriage was finally legal in the state of New Jersey.
Newly elected United States Senator Cory Booker officiated for the first set of seven happy couples getting hitched.
When Booker asks for any objections one man called out “this is unlawful in the name of God.”
The man, who was speaking on behalf of the Almighty, was escorted out and Booker continued to proceed with the ceremonies.
It was all done with grace and class.
Some folks on the right are clearly alarmed that gay marriage and other related issues are becoming more accepted by most of the citizenry. (Of course there is always Kansas.)
Currently, Pennsylvania remains the only state in the northeast that does not sanction either same sex marriage or civil unions.
Politicians who do not serve all the people must transform and brand some groups as “the other.” Be it racial or gender or sexual orientation politics, when folks hate a demographic writ large, this captures their focus and hatred.
But the gay rights platform is increasingly a non-starter in many areas. The Tea Party opponent of Booker, who was defeated in the election last week, tried to cast Booker as gay. Voters simply rejected that notion.
So mazel tov and congratulations to all the newlyweds and those to follow.
