Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) shared on Thursday why he became a Congressman. No, it’s not because he wanted to make the world a better place. No, it was not to enact the will of the people. No, it was not in an effort to ease suffering in the world. Gohmert had a better reason for launching into a political career: he felt it was just wrong that single women were receiving public assistance while “having as many as fifteen babies.”
No, it’s not the 1980’s — Gohmert is actually railing against that old Ronald Reagan myth of the Welfare Queen. According to Gohmert, women are content to stay single and pop out babies while receiving government assistance. Gohmert says that the war on poverty is a massive failure, citing the existence of poor people and (of all things) the fact that single women are not paid more as evidence. He says that single women continuously give birth to child after child in an attempt to get more money to dig themselves “out of the hole.”
Gohmert doesn’t feel that single women and their children need to eat. He has a better solution: pay for their daycare and let them fend for themselves! Sure, it will be difficult to make it to work emaciated and starving, but at least they will have the pride of providing for their children the best they can.
In the past, Gohmert has suggested using the Bible as a foreign policy guide and has spoken in support of the Texas Board of Education’s revisionist and anti-science efforts. “Why do the children have to suffer for the ignorance and stupidity of the government,” Gohmert asks as he wraps up his screed against poor people. In watching him, we wonder the same thing.
