Vice reports that video has surfaced on Monday showing a Palestinian man being killed by a sniper’s bullet as he was attempting to cross an alleyway between two buildings.
The man, who wears a green shirt and black pants, is described as looking for his family in the devastated neighborhood of Shujaiyah; while attempting to cross an alleyway between two buildings, he’s shot at by the sniper. Soon afterwards, he’s shot by two additional rounds while on the ground and killed. The event was captured on a cellphone.
The attack occurred as volunteers and rescue crews were attempting to uncover bodies after Sunday, which saw the most intense violence and destruction of the 14-day operation. An activist organization, the International Solidarity Movement, which recorded and uploaded the video online, described it in a statement:
The Israeli military just shot a Gazan man trying to reach his family, during an announced ceasefire. He was with a group of municipality workers and international human rights defenders who were attempting to retrieve injured people in the Shujaiya neighborhood…. They shot him, and then continued to fire as he was on the ground. We had no choice but to retreat. We couldn’t reach him due to the artillery fire and then he stopped moving.
Human rights organizations and international bodies have criticized Israel for the mounting civilian death toll since the military operation began in Gaza two weeks ago. Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said in a statement yesterday, “Since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge in the Gaza strip, the majority of the dead and wounded in Gaza are civilians, and medical workers are also coming under fire.”
MSF also reported instances of the Israeli military shelling or shooting at paramedics and ambulances. The United Nations has documented that the vast majority of those killed in this onslaught have been civilians, including almost 100 children.
If the accusation that Israeli soldiers are shooting at paramedics and ambulances are true, Israel is violating the Geneva Code of Conventions, which prohibits engaging medical personnel:
Medical personnel exclusively engaged in the search for, or the collection, transport or treatment of the wounded or sick, or in the prevention of disease, staff exclusively engaged in the administration of medical units and establishments, as well as chaplains attached to the armed forces, shall be respected and protected in all circumstances.
History has a very sick sense of humor.
You can watch the video of the man being shot below, but be warned: it’s disturbing.
