Once again, racism raises its ugly head in Missouri. This time in Poplar Bluff, where racist posts on his Facebook page has landed Peter Tinsley, a city councilman in hot water first with his constituents, and also with other members of his party after he attempted to explain his offensive posts claiming that at the time he was “a very active Republican, very opposed to Obama.”
Speaking at a city council meeting on Monday Reverend Tommy Robinson, who lives in Tinsley’s ward expressed his displeasure with the councilman’s offensive posts:
“To come from a city council [member], a city government official, this is highly unthought of, even in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. I’m highly upset over this, along with the residents of our ward.”
“I apologize from the bottom of my heart,” Tinsley told Robinson before going on to make excuses for his behavior.
“At one time, I was a very active Republican, very opposed to Obama,” Tinsley said as if this excused his crude posts and although the residents of his ward have accepted his apology, his excuse has angered members of his own party who were quick to denounce his claims saying that the posts were not representative of the party.
The chairman of the Butler County Republican Party, Eddy Justice was quick to denounce Tinsley for blaming the posts on his activity within the party:
“Republicans believe everyone should be judged on their qualifications, on their ability.”
Once again Tinsley found himself backtracking and in damage control mode, attempting to clear his name while avoiding offending anyone else, saying on Tuesday:
“I want people to know that I am very remorseful for it. It was inappropriate. I believe I got caught up in an emotional moment of sharing jokes. It seemed funny at the time but today it’s very serious and it’s not funny at all.”
“We want to see some positive outcomes and that really validates an individual’s apology. We are looking for the same thing that the church would be looking for and that is healing and restoration,” Robinson said.
