As long as Citizens United v. FEC is the law of the land, progressives should do all they can to make it work for their candidates. That is exactly what Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) plans on doing through his PAC, Progressive Voters of America. His strategy includes fundraising for state-wide progressive prospects in some of the reddest of the red states. The senator’s first volley: “There is no shortage of billionaires willing to bankroll extreme right-wing candidates. We have to respond.”
Going further, Sanders explained,
“I believe that in every state in the country the vast majority of the people are working people. These are people who are struggling to keep their heads above water economically, these are people who want Social Security defended, they want to raise the minimum wage, they want changes in our trade policy. And to basically concede significant parts of America, including the South, to the right-wing is to me not only stupid politics, but even worse than that — you just do not turn your backs on millions and millions of working people.”
Senator Sanders is even considering his own run for the presidency in 2016. As he told In These Times:
“I suppose if you’re running for president, probably going to Mississippi and Alabama is not the place most candidates would go. You go to Iowa and New Hampshire or something like that. But what I do think is there needs to be a progressive voice in the presidential process. I hope very much there will be a voice coming up to do that.”
A political independent and the only committed democratic socialist in the entire U.S. Congress, the good senator has never been one to mince words about the Democratic Party’s shortcomings, even as he caucuses with them in the Senate. His PAC will seek to counter the enormous amount of corporate dollars that line Democratic coffers, as those which do likewise for the Republicans. In the past three election cycles, Progressive Voters of America has raised $300,000. Admittedly, that is a modest start, but welcome all the same, as is any support for progressive voices in the halls of red state governments — or any state. A born fighter like Bernie Sanders would never shirk from any less of a challenge.
