A mother, her children, and her grandson had the scare of a lifetime courtesy of another crazy guy with a gun. The abrupt incident all began to unfold beneath an overpass at the intersection of Candelaria Road and Interstate 25 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The mother, Theresa Lechuga, reportedly had to pull onto the shoulder of the road to avoid a collision with the second car. Apparently, the passenger in the second car, Daniel Rozzi, took issue with Lechuga’s evasive maneuver and an argument erupted. Frightened for herself, as well as her children and grandson in the vehicle with her, she decided to drive away; Rozzi followed.
Now thoroughly frightened, Lechuga tried to go through a red light to lose the enraged stranger, but he followed through after her. That’s when they began to hear the gunshots. The children immediately flattened themselves to the floor, yelling to Theresa to keep driving, which she did.
The chase continued south down Frontage Road, parallel to Interstate 25, through more red lights as shots continued from the car behind them. In fact, Rozzi and his driver’s pursuit did not end until they were hit by a truck as they crossed Lomas Boulevard. Lechuga told KOAT Albuquerque:
I feel sorry for the people who got hit in that truck…I’m really, really sorry they got hit, but thank you. Because if not, I don’t know how much more of this would be going on, or if I would’ve wrecked.
Once the dust settled—literally and figuratively, Rozzi was charged with child abuse and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked on Saturday, when the incident occurred, and was released on bond by Tuesday.
