As women all across America know, the modern Republican Party doesn’t care about securing them equal treatment, equal rights or equal pay.
As Republican strategists have been vocal about their attempts to make sure that Republican politicians stop making insensitive comments about rape victims, the latest whopper from Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) are sure to make them pull their hair out.
Defending his dangerous proposal to ban all abortions after 20 weeks with absolutely no exceptions for rape and incest, Franks claimed, “the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low.”
Continuing his hot streak of attacking women with bigoted and illogical fallacies, Franks continued, “But when you make that exception [allowing rape victims to get abortions], there’s usually a requirement to report the rape within 48 hours. And in this case that’s impossible because this is in the sixth month of gestation. And that’s what completely negates and vitiates the purpose of such an amendment.”
This isn’t the first Republican lawmaker to share his 18th-Century opinion on the validity of rape victims’ reproductive rights. In 2012, multiple GOP candidates lost elections after sharing their ignorant and offensive beliefs about the rights of rape victims.
Missouri Rep. Todd Akin set off a media firestorm when he stated that a woman could not get pregnant from “legitimate rape” because her body “has ways of shutting that whole thing down”.
Only weeks later, Indiana Senate candidate Richard Murdoch told rape victims to embrace pregnancy as “a gift from God”.
If this is the GOP’s attempt at modernizing their antiquated platform and attracting increasingly progressive voters, it’s safe to say that they are doing it wrong. Can it be that it is simply too late for a bigoted “old boys club” to reverse course?
Rep. Franks’s claims are so ignorant and simplistic that they come crashing down under even the most basic scientific scrutiny. He makes the academically lazy claim that rape related pregnancies are “rare,” while dismissing an estimated 32,101 woman who get pregnant from rape each year in America.
According to a recent study, 32.4% of rape victims who get pregnant did not find out they were pregnant until their second trimester, way beyond the strict 20 week time-limit Franks wants to impose on all American women seeking abortions. About half of these victims choose have an abortion.
This means that several thousand women who will get pregnant resulting from rape in the coming year will be forced to go through with the pregnancy and have their rapist’s offspring.
